1. Leaf Color or Leaf Fall -- Vegetation Change Documentation -- Emphasis Creativity and Data  (Individual but you could possibly compare with another person.  See your instructor for options.)

1. Requirements:

1. Find a spot where you are surrounded by trees but you can take photos at each point on the compass.  (N, S, E, W)  See your instructor to borrow a compass if you don’t own one.

2. Mark the spot in some way so you will know EXACTLY where to return.

3. On each of your 6 field study visits, take photos perfectly facing each of these directions at exactly the same height, zoom and angle (so the picture is facing exactly the same each time).  Be sure to label which picture is the north, which is south, etc.

4. Compare the vegetation for color or leaf fall.  There are a number of ways to do this, but Adobe Photoshop can help:  (If you don’t have photoshop)

1. LEAF COLOR ANALYSIS

1. Open Adobe Photoshop

2. File, Open, (open your picture from wherever it is saved)

3. Go to Photoshop Preferences (top left) and choose Guides, Grid, Slices & Count…

4. Make your grid color black with a gridline every 10 percent (10% at the largest – you may use smaller percentages or an inch size if it will be better with your picture.). Set the subdivisions to 1.

5. Click on View, Show, Grid 6. Your picture will now have a grid on it. Use the grid to count what sections have whatever color you are looking for. If you have it set at 10%, your data will automatically be a percentage of the whole picture.

6. See your instructor with any questions.

2. Required Checkpoints

1. September 9:  Show the instructor your first set of pictures with your analysis.

2. October 11:  Create one or more data table(s) to show your results.  Meet with your instructor to show your continuing progress.   

3. November 22:  Finish your last visit and create graph(s) from your data table (s).  Make a plan for a creative way to display your results.  Discuss this plan with your instructor.

4. November 30: Hand in your final display.
